The traditional Adirondack chair is a rustic, outdoor wooden chair.  Original designs were made with 11 flat wooden slats, featuring an angled back and seat with legs that extended behind the seat back.  A common feature of Adirondack chairs are their wide armrests. Originally, the Adirondack chair was named the Westport Plank Chair, but was renamed after the Adirondack Mountain range located in Northern New York State of which Westport, NY is located in.

Thomas Lee designed and built the first Adirondack chair, which he called the Westport Plank Chair, while vacationing in Westport, NY in 1903. Mr. Lee was in need of chairs for his summer home and after several attempts, arrived at the traditional design that we're all familiar with today.
