What is drip edge?

Drip edge is a long strip of metal flashing that is nailed to plywood, at the eaves (edges) of the roof, under the shingles. It helps promote the longevity of your roof by preventing water from seeping under the roof shingles and directing the water away from the fascia. Drip edge overhangs the roof edge and shingles, with a small flange that bends away from the fascia.

Why should you use drip edge?

  • Prevents water from rotting the wooden substructure of your roof.
  • Provides a tight seal under the edge of the roof, which prevents small critters from entering your attic.
  • Protects your roof from ice and water damage during winter months or severe rain and wind storms.
  • Prevents movement between fascia and deck boards.
  • Diverts water into gutters and away from your house and foundation.
  • Improves the lifespan of your roof and shingles.
